DESIGNING MY CHARTER SCHOOL

Charter schools are a relatively new concept in American education. Groups of parents band together and establish schools that they believe will better meet the needs of their children. They draw up a charter that includes goals and objectives and a design for their school. If it meets the required specifications, tax dollars are diverted to those schools. They usually are cheaper per student than standard schools, even though they are required to have certified teachers, or at least have their curriculum approved and supervised by certified teachers.
SO, if you were one of those parents designing a charter school, what would your number one goal be? (Goals are big, long-range aims that may never be fully reached.) Some examples might be: “Every student would learn to think creatively and problem solve.” “Every student would be prepared for college or a career.” “Every student would be productive citizens with a concern for social justice.”
What would your school be like? (Remember, it needs to fit with your goal.
Where would it be?
What would it look like?
What would some of the classes be for the elementary age students?
What would some of the classes be for the middle school age students?
What would some of the classes be for the high school age students?
What kind of people would you hire to be teachers?
What makes your school most different from the standard public school?
