What meaning is communicated by the pattern of imagery that you have chosen? 2) Observe Milton’s subtlety as a poet. Notice that in books I and II of Paradise Lost, Milton puts in the mouth of Satan the same arguments that he himself (i.e., Milton) used against King Charles I of England. In doing so, what is Milton trying to show us about Satan? How does Satan subvert and misapply truth? How does Satan use our cherished ideals to delude our thinking about God? 3) Consider the ways that Milton represents the glory of God: How is God more glorious than the pagan gods who inspired the pagan epics of antiquity? How big is God? Why is Milton so fascinated with the size and scale of things (Satan, Chaos, creation) in his epic?
