The Endocrine Orchestra
The
endocrine system is composed of various tissues and organs found
throughout the body that secrete hormones that, in conjunction with the
nervous
system, maintain homeostasis and promote crucial processes such as
growth, metabolism, and reproduction. This system works with the nervous
system to support homeostasis.
For
this week’s discussion, you will be assigned an endocrine gland to
research. Please review the
functions
of each endocrine gland and the hormones produced by each gland before
addressing the discussion questions.
You
have been asked to participate in a community health fair roundtable
about the endocrine system. In your response to this week’s discussion,
address the following questions for your assigned endocrine gland. Then,
throughout the week, review your classmates’
posts and comment as appropriate on at least two other posts per the
Discussion Guidelines.
Provide a brief overview of your assigned endocrine gland, including its function and the major
hormones produced or released by this gland.
Choose one hormone
produced or released by this gland and discuss its role in the body.
What might happen if the amount of this hormone being released was too low (hyposecretion)?
What might happen if this hormone was produced or secreted in excess (hypersecretion)?
Research
a disease that is the result of hyper- or hyposecretion of your
selected hormone. Then,
identify the disease and discuss whether the disease is the result of
hyper- or hyposecretion of the hormone. What are the major signs and
symptoms of this imbalance?
What advice would you offer Latasha, a 55-year-old female, who asks about treatment and prevention
for your selected disease/disorder?
