This week we learned about rational choice theory (RCT). According to RCT, crime is the product of careful consideration and planning. It is one of the multiple theories you will learn in this course, but it has a particular following. After completing the readings this week, reflect upon answer the following question:
Do people make the rational choice to commit a crime, or are most of them motivated by other factors such as uncontrolled psychological and emotional drives, or social forces such as poverty?
Include the following aspects in the discussion:
Whether you agree with the idea that committing a crime is a rational choice.
What other factors may influence someone when they decide to commit a crime?
Is it possible for people to control those factors when deciding to commit a crime? Why or why not.
Are there any influences that might justify a person committing a crime?
