Case study: Julie’s Flight
Julie is a 65-year-old
grandmother recently returned home to Victoria, BC, after visiting her daughter
and four grandchildren who live in Australia. She tries to get through the long
flights by watching several movies and then sleeping for as long as possible.
She does not like to drink too much during the flight because of those annoying
line-ups for the washroom.
A day after returning
home, Julie notices that her left leg is painful and swollen. The next morning
the pain in her left leg is worse and her leg is so swollen that she can’t even
fit her left foot into her slipper. She decides to visit the visits emergency
room of the local hospital.
While waiting for the doctor Julie
begins to feel faint and short of
breath and experiences sudden, sharp
chest pain, mostly on the right side. Her
shortness of breath gets worse, as does the chest pain. Julie coughs and
produces sputum mixed with bright red blood. The nurse with Julie is alarmed;
however, she remains calm, calls the emergency medical team and notes the
following:

The patient is extremely anxious and in a
“cold sweat”

The skin around the patient’s mouth and
her tongue
has a blue tinge
·
Pulse: 120 per minute
·
Blood pressure: 85/50 mmHg
·
Respiratory rate: 30 per minute
