n the counseling profession, we regularly set and discuss engagement norms with clients, both in individual and group counseling settings. In group counseling, it is common for the group to determine engagement norms (sometimes referred to as group rules).
The purpose of engagement norms is to agree upon expectations for how we will interact and engage with one another during our time together. Our final engagement norms list will be posted and serve as part of the expectations for our course.

Engagement norms can be related to content or process. Content refers to the what, so to speak. What will people post, what will the substance be? The process is about the how. How will we engage with one another? What qualities will we value and display through our engagement? Here are some examples:
Content: Posts will include connections to the readings. Posts will be thoughtful and substantive.
Process: Posters will demonstrate respect for others by using inclusive language. We will have an open mind when reading and responding to posts.
In your initial post:
State what engagement norms you believe are essential.
Give the rationale for why you selected the engagement norms you named.
