Background:
– My team is helping out an organization called NGF (Next Generation Focus) who helps low-income families by providing an after-school program involving tutoring and challenging oneself through a program that relates to STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Maths). Due to COVID-19, they have shifted from being in-person to doing their program virtually through means of Zoom. My team will create STEM activities for Grades K-8. The grades are divided into 4 groups containing Kindergarden and 1st Grade, 2nd and 3rd Grade, 4th and 5th Grade, and 6th through 8th Grade.
– Kindergarden and 1st Grade will have 10 Stem-related activities that can be reused every year since they will be about STEM-related holidays such as Earth Day. They will have short tutorial videos for each activity.
-2nd and 3rd Grade will have one STEM activity that involves creating an illustrative comic book that represents the scientific water cycle.
-4th and 5th Grade will have 5-10 STEM activity labs. They will have short tutorial videos for each lab.
-6th, 7th, and 8th Grade will have 5-10 STEM activity labs
– All materials used in the activities are low-cost materials or can be found around the house at no extra cost.
– Families have the ability to engage in the virtual activities with their student.
– Research was done by researching STEAM-related activities online that would fit each age group. Additionally, members talked to peers, younger family members, and children that were babysat to figure out what STEAM labs could fit the students.
– The Uploaded Document are a rough draft of the activities for 6th-8th GRADE.
