Students will use a perspective on television (e.g. feminist, critical theory, Frankfurt School, post-modern, Birmingham School) to understand the meaning of a program, network, genre, etc. in reflecting and/or encouraging social change (broadly understood). Essays may, for example, ask a question such as: how does The Simpsons reflect post-Fordism? how does the show discuss class? what role does hockey broadcasting play in fostering Canadian nationalism? are Netflix programs different artistically from broadcast television? how is meaning constructed in a show like M*A*S*H or All In the Family?
