One of the major themes of the course has been the role that race, ethnicity, class and gender has played in the development of scientific and medical knowledge and practice. Another has been the significance of the political, economic and cultural values and contexts of the various eras in the development of science over time.
Explore one of the following questions or a topic of your choice in a 4-5 page (1000-1250 word) essay which 1) develops a clear argument, 2) considers at least two historical periods, 3) uses at least four different course readings (or external research sources) including at least two primary sources and 4) focuses on change over time.
Please note: Secondary Education Science/Math students must focus their attention on science for this paper. For non-Secondary Education students, you have a little bit more flexibility in the topic you choose.
Potential questions:
What role has race, gender, ethnicity or class (choose one) played in science and/or medicine?
Develop an argument about science and/or medicine and its relationship with the state.
True, false, or somewhere in between: The presence of genius scientists explains why science developed where it did.
True, false or somewhere in between: Science and/or medicine has been a uniformly positive development in human history.
In an argumentative essay, contextualize the scientific, medical and public health responses to the COVID-19 pandemic with events, individuals, ideas and themes from the history of science and medicine. What context could help us all better understand those responses?
What has differentiated “science” from “non-science” (or “medicine” from “non-medicine”) and how does that idea change over time/region/culture?
Topic of your choice: write to Dr. Hughes with a proposal to get it approved before beginning. The topic should be explored in a way which discusses change over time. (This option may use a different source base than the course readings, but should still include at least four sources, with two being primary sources..)
Papers should have a clear argument that reflects change over time, and must include:
A title which reflects the argument
An introduction which clearly presents the argument developed in the paper.
Clear body paragraphs which develop the argument in a clear and persuasive manner with claims supported by evidence from the course readings or external research.
Footnotes or paranthetical references for quotes, ideas and elements not common knowledge.
A well-developed conclusion.
A bibliography page that includes all sources consulted
