In this final week, we will start by examining the effects of deinstitutionalization, starting in the 1950’s, on those with mental health issues, their families and communities. In preparation you will first need to read the brief article by Amadeo found in Week 3 Documents. This brief article tries to provide facts and figures plus the pros and cons related to this issue.
Your initial post should describe the consequences of deinstitionalization, and the possible reasons for much of that.With the closing of many state hospitals, where have many with mental health issues shown up instead? Is there a current need for stronger commitment laws for both inpatients and outpatients? What services could be expanded to address some of these issues that have been created? Which services should we consider reducing? What should be the future direction of our mental health care system in light of all this?
This is more than a money issue as NY State is outspent by only one other State, and yet has lackluster outcomes. The USA spends about the same as other developed Countries 5.6% of health care dollars. How much money is being spent on medications is also a consideration as it may eat up dollars that would have gone to direct care.
