What similarities and differences do you notice between the “Eyewitness Response to Kristallnacht” and the Gestapo report on Kristallnacht? Based on the two accounts, what stood out to the different viewers? What do you think was the goal of the pogrom?
In the Hochstadt documents on Nazi murder of the disabled, the authors of the documents discuss murdering the disabled with startling practicality. Instead of debating the ethics of these murders, they discuss more mundane topics such as where to store urns, how much money it will cost per person, and how mayors should handle the public perception of these murders. What was your reaction when you read these documents? Were you surprised by how widespread knowledge of these murders was among politicians? Why do you think no one brought up the question of ethics or morality? How do you think this murder program set a precedent for future genocides by the Nazi’s?
Bergen notes that “photographs taken during the Kristallnacht reveal how public the violence and destruction were” (112). However, she notes that images of the pogrom could be misleading. In what ways were the photographs misleading? Give an example. Why do you think Kristallnacht was the last major public riot instigated by the Nazi’s?
