What social commentary is the text making and how does that allow us a greater insight into the literature?

It is a “close reading” of When I Was Puerto Rican by Esmeralda Santiago. I was hoping to have the “close reading” be centered around the
theme of “identity” or “cultural identity.” Ultimately, the “close reading” should have substantial amount of analysis regarding the mentioned
theme. In terms of the “close reading,” a dictionary can be used to dive deeper into certain words to examine diction when needed. Besides a dictionary, only the following source that is attached will be used, which is the piece of literature itself.
The other attachment is addional instructions on how to approach a “close reading” in which was given to me.

To brainstorm further on the topic, the following questions may be considered:
What does the text mean?
What social commentary is the text making and how does that allow us a greater insight into the literature?
Does the text manuever towards empowerment over oppression? How and where?
