Concept and goal of Paper: You can write about whatever you want, or whatever interests you, or whatever you learned directly from the primary sources. Remember, treat the sources as a window to know (study) the past. That said, the main weight (90%) of your argument should come from these sources. That said, you do not need to cite any other sources.
Make sure that your evidence are quotations, and that they match the claim you make in your paper. The overall goal is for you to do your best at making a generalizable claim (thesis) by arguing for that claim through the main Primary Sources. In research we try to make generalizable claims about the past. If you see similar themes, issues, or concerns throughout the primary sources that validates your observations, then the best thing is to utilize these observations as a way to strengthen your thesis and argument.
Be careful about who’s voice you cite. Even though you have the option of choosing from a primary source packet, Do not cite the introduction of the editors of primary sources. I want you to only cite the historical actors/writers of the past. Nonetheless, for your very first citation, however, you will have to cite the full packet. Thereafter, you cite the historical actor(s) as often as possible. You do not have to write exactly what the authors intended to accomplish when they wrote these words, but you also can. You can, and should, utilize these sources to write about things you see that these sources reveal about the past. It can be discussions of institutions, or power, or gender etc, race, cultures. Money.
Another way to think about it is for you to TELL A STORY (I may sound repetitive, but instructions and guidance are important): Tell a story utilizing key ideas, concepts, and/or themes to reconstruct an understanding of the past through only the use of primary sources. Think about this as a story you would want to tell someone. That someone would want to read it, but you will back up your claims with evidence (by quoting directly from the primary source). If these sources show you something you did not know already, then this may be a good story to tell.

a) What story do you see that speaks about the time period at hand?
Do this by looking at what these primary sources have in common
b) Based on these sources, what can you identify as common problems, issues, concerns of the time period at hand?
USAGE OF EVIDENCE/DATA:
1) The weight of your story needs to be grounded on evidence (as quotations) that come directly from the primary sources (chose only one set of primary sources). This means that for this paper you do not need any outside sources other than the primary sources assigned to you. If you do cite or reference other readings/lectures of the course, make sure that you keep it short, and at a minimum, and that you only reference it in a footnote.
Again, I want your main argument (evidence being the quotations you use) to mainly come from the primary sources. The objective is to see how well you can do with that one packet of primary sources.
