What type of colony according to our classifications? (was it a settler state? an extrative tributary? a geo-strategic state?)

This announcement serves as a reminder for your assignment to be uploaded and submitted on blackboard before class on Monday, February 14th.
Case studies are a way for students to dive deeper into course content while also exploring an area of interest. As a popular format for research in Comparative Politics, students will learn to consider how phenomena experienced by particular places or populations can reflect global patterns. Students are expected to use scholarly sources, data, and media to relate their case to the course concept discussed for that week. Students are encouraged to choose countries with which they are unfamiliar.
For this case study students will consider colonization and it’s implications on current conditions in contemporary countries.
Choose a country from the Global South and answer the following. The CIA World Factbook is a great place to start. Then, do some of your own research via google scholar, the library, etc. to find all the facts. You may write your response either as bulleted answers to each question or cohesively as a paper–whichever format you prefer. Please do not copy and paste from websites and pay attention to plagerism.
Current Country
Pre-Colonial History (what did society look like? were there pre-existing political stuctures? kingdoms? empires?)
Colonial Power(s) (what empire conquered the colony? when? for how long?)
What type of colony according to our classifications? (was it a settler state? an extrative tributary? a geo-strategic state?)
Decolonization Process (peaceful, protests, conflict?)
Current Country Conditions (poverty, inequality, corruption, conflict, etc.)
How do you think colonization contributed to current country conditions?

This is not meant to be a time-consuming assignment. There is no need to spend more than an hour on it. The idea is that rather than reading, we will do an interactive exercise to expose us to new places, narratives, and perspectives.
