1. Clark (2013, p. 93) characterizes open source intelligence in the following passage:
“Open source material is perhaps the most valuable source of intelligence, and is typically the most easily overlooked by government intelligence organizations in favor of classified information. Its chief value is that it is relatively easy to obtain.”
Review the information in Chapter 11 of your text book (Open Source Information and Intelligence: a Perspective for State, Local, and Tribal Law Enforcement Agencies) of the book and render an opinion as to the validity Clark’s statement. Support your opinion with a discussion of the strengths, weaknesses, risks, and benefits to using open source intelligence. Finally, pick one source or type of open source that you believed would be most beneficial for strategic intelligence analysis (as the term is applied to focusing on criminal activity).

2. “Without analysis, there is no intelligence. No single methodology is used for intelligence analysis; rather, various approaches and analytic tools are used, depending on the type of data/information that are available and the type of analysis (tactical or strategic) that is being performed” (Carter, 2009, p. 262).
For this discussion, review the information on pages 262 through 269 of your textbook focusing on intelligence analysis. Then, select a crime problem of interest to you and identifying an analytical process that could produce valuable intelligence to address your identified problem.
As an example, imagine you are an analyst tasked with providing information regarding a series of car thefts within a given geographical area. Using one or more of the tools or approaches outlined in the textbook, what information could you retrieve and use to generate tactical level intelligence to address this specific problem? What tools would you use? What types of products which you generate with your information? And who would be the best suited to receive your final intelligence products?
