Each student will select a topic on an instrument covered in a journal in the Analytical
Chemistry journal within the last three years and will prepare a 10 page ( 12 point, 1.5
line spacing) term paper on the subject. Go to the website listed below and browse the
current and past issues to select a topic. The purpose for the paper is for you to learn to
research a topic and write a scientific review of an analytical method. The website is
http://pubs.acs.org/journal/ancham
You should begin looking through the articles over the past 1-3 years to find a topic of
interest. Once you have selected a topic then discuss it with the instructor. You should
use at least five references, including your main article, to write up your paper.
The write up should have the following sections:
1. Motivations for the instrumental method (what is it good for, what types of
analysis are possible, and how does having the method benefit science?)
2. Basic design of the instrumental design and theory of operation
3. Example of some analytical data collected using the instrument
4. Conclusions and future directions
