I believe one of the unique challenges caregivers are experiencing during this pandemic that isn’t being discussed enough is the shortage of workers we are seeing throughout the country. COVID ran rampant through nursing homes and left the business side of the operation hurting. With people being taken out of the homes, there was less of a demand for professional caregivers in certain areas. This forced nursing homes to lay off staff to compensate for the losses they were hit with from residents leaving. Now, as the vaccines are being rolled out and the elderly become more protected and families feel safe leaving them in the care of a nursing home, these facilities are short staffed and the caregivers there are having a hard time keeping up with their patients. The federal government should provide some subsidy to these facilities so they can recoup some of the losses suffered from the pandemic in order to re-staff their facility and provide adequate care to the elderly.
