This assignment challenges you to apply the method of semiotic analysis by developing a brief but thorough mythological or ideological interpretation of an example drawn from any aspect of visual culture (EXCEPT anything you produced or created yourself).
Select an image of your own choosing (e.g. a still or sequence from film, TV, video game, or print media) and provide an interpretation of its significance by applying the method of semiotics, drawing in particular on Roland Barthess theory of mythology as a way of bringing to light the ideology of the image. What are most important signifiers in the image youve selected? What visual elements (e.g. color, composition, etc., referenced in the Close Reading Guidelines provided in Module 2) are most relevant in constructing the denotative (or descriptive) meaning of the image and in concealing its ideological (or its connotative) meaning? In your interpretation of the image, identify which elements of the image are denotative and connotative and explain the ideology promoted through your analysis of signs. Please remember to include a jpg of or link to your selected image in your submission so that your instructor and peer review can follow your analysis. If you consulted any references, please make sure you include them in a works cited page.
Hint: The ideal image for this assignment is promotional/drawn from advertising culture.
