Must be familiar with this subject and class.
Similar to Hollywood’s cinematic depictions of race, class, and gender, stereotypical characters portraying disabled humans have become so prevalent that society interprets the (mis)representation as normal. We see how characters portraying stereotypically disabled humans have been routinely presented in order to evoke an emotional response, which in turn strengthens societal assumptions.
Original Initial Post Requirements
Part 1:
Watch Part 1 of Psychology in Film: Case Studies in Mental Disorders and select ONE Hero and ONE villain from the characters listed on AFI’s Top 100 Heroes and Villains list. Analyze the character’s psychological motivation by answering each of the following three questions.
1. What was the character’s psychological motivation to be a Hero or Villain? Think outside the box and little bit and break it down. (about 1 paragraph)
2. Are there any real-life situations that help you relate to their motivation? (i.e. is their heroism relatable within your own society?) (about 1 paragraph)
3. In the film, what was society’s reaction to the hero or villain? (i.e. were they supported in their cause, misunderstood etc.) (about 1 paragraph)
Part 2:
Ed Gein: The Ghoul of Plainfield analyzed the real inspiration for some of Hollywood’s most ruthless, yet recognizable and popular villains. What was your reaction to the film and/or Hollywood’s use of real-life history when creating some movies? Why might using real-life individuals with mental disorders be problematic when concerning the public’s understanding of mental illness?
Part 3:
How has cinema linked issues of race, ethnicity, or class to disability? Refer back to the chapter and Part 3 of the video lecture to support your answer. Use 2-3 examples when arguing your points.
