Discussion 1 May Vs. Pearson Court Case

Tonia Fergusan from the Erie County Department of Elections discussed the difficutlies and challenges it takes for a candidate to get on the ballot. Attached is a court case from a local township official race.
Please review the attached court case and supporting documents. Please use additional sources such as the Erie County website and local news media to help you better understand the issue at hand.

Discussion 2 Political Contributions and the First Amendment

Freedom of speech is certainly winning: When Ulysses S. Grant ran for president in 1868, he benefited from large contributions from wealthy entrepreneurs, such as railroad tycoon Cornelius Vanderbilt. “Never before was a candidate placed under such great obligation to men of wealth as was Grant,” . In 1868, Ulysses Grant’s election effort cost $150,000 – or $2.7 million in today’s money. But if Grant was among the first presidents to receive large sums of campaign funds from rich businessmen, he was far from the last.
In 2016, Donald Trump’s campaign committee and outside groups supporting him spent nearly 150 times more. Hillary Clinton’s campaign, combined with outside groups, spent nearly 300 times more.

Read “Money-in Politic Timeline” in the February 22 class folder and research any additional information to help support your responses to the below questions.

1) Define freedom of speech when it refers to a political campaign. How does polictical contributons and fundraising influence the First Amendment Right?
2) Do we need more limits? Local, state and federal contributions? If so who and how should these limits be enforced or created.
3) Discussion during the Feb 22 class focused on the theory (roughly summarized) that the candidate who raises/spends the most money ‘tends’ to win the race. Do you agree or disagree? Should there be measure to level the field for potential challengers? Is the current system level for challengers vs. incumbants? What changes should be made.
