Based upon the attached Primary Source documents, how would you characterize the role of religion in the North American British colonies in the 17th century? Some questions to be considered when answering this question are as follows:
Was there truly religious freedom? If so, where and under what circumstances?
What obstacles existed that may have prevented religious freedom?
What was the relationship between religion and the government? Provide examples.
What further impediments did women encounter? Why did women have to overcome these additional obstacles?
What was the relationship between religious freedom and freedom of speech?
When considering the Anne Hutchinson case, what were some marked differences between that proceeding versus legal proceedings and/or interrogations the United States today (or just about any time after the Bill of Rights was ratified)?
What fears did colonial leaders express should colonists not act according to the colony’s religious interests?
If one were to practice “irreligion” or “atheism,” what hindrances might he/she incur?
The essay should be 750 to 1000 words in length. Essays that are below or exceed the word length requirement will have a 10 to 20-point deduction. Feel free to think “outside the box,” but be sure to reference which primary source you are referring to when providing contentions.
Avoid inserting personal opinions, but rather use the sources to guide and support arguments.
The essay should start with an Introduction paragraph that provides a broad overview of the content and a thesis statement that puts forth your main contentions. The essay should also include at least two or three body paragraphs that answer some of the questions posed above. Finally, the essay should end with a Closing paragraph that provides an overview of what you addressed in the essay and restates your thesis. Neither the Introductory nor the Closing paragraph should include much, if any, detailed information.
Avoid interjecting personal opinions, but keep the essay as objective and analytical as possible. Also, avoid using first person or second person when writing your essay (Do not use the words, I, me, we, you, etc…).
A Works Cited page is not required, however you will need in-text citations. Incorporate short quotes often in order to defend your statements. Cite as follows:
