Paper vs. Digital Notetaking
Web-based note-taking apps and resources, including Evernote, OneNote, Any.Do and PaperHelper are digital tools that transfer the work of handwriting, filing and organizing notes to the computer, saving time and creating permanent storage for important information. Many K-12 teachers and students have embraced the ease and efficiency of digital note-taking, particularly at the secondary school level. However, two Princeton University researchers found that college students who took notes on laptops did not perform as well on a test featuring conceptual questions as did students who took notes longhand using paper and pen. The researchers attributed the results to the fact that longhand note-takers have to synthesize, not just transcribe, what they were reading or hearing, a phenomenon they called “desirable difficulty.” By recording notes longhand, students became more engaged in figuring out the deeper meaning of material and that engagement helped them to perform better on subsequent test questions.
In this activity, explore the dynamics of paper versus digital note-taking, drawing upon the first-hand experience of personal note-taking habits in college courses or while in high school.
