Topic: Earth’s Carrying Capacity for Humans

Background:
Carrying capacity is determined by three main factors; the size of the current population, the amount of available resources in an area, and how the resources are used by the population. All populations can be limited by the carrying capacity of their immediate environment whether it be worms in a compost bin or rabbits in a meadow.
Here are some things to consider:
Estimations say it takes 2.1 hectares of land and water to provide food, clothing, shelter, and fresh air for the average human.
Comparatively, meeting the same needs for an average American requires 8 hectares and the average Bangladeshi is 0.6 hectares (one hectare is 2.5 acres or 10,000 m2).
It is also estimated Earth needs 1.5 years to replenish what humans use in 1 year.
Examine the infographic representing human population growth over time. Consider what factors may have been responsible for the exponential increases in human population seen beginning in the mid 1700’s through the 1940’s. What were some medical and technological advances which took place? What were some unintentional consequences of the same advances? Has there been equity of the impact of such resources?
Discussion question:
Do you think Earth’s carrying capacity has the potential to support the growing human population? Cite some examples to support your claim when considering the above mentioned factors.
