What were the major cultural barriers to receiving medical care?

INSTRUCTIONS for the assignment :
Read Pandemics, Politics and Society: Critical Perspectives on the COVID-19 Crisis. and take notes on the cultural experiences/differences relating to medicine and health.
Guiding questions for note taking include:
How does culture shape COVID-19 illness experiences?
e.g., interpreting symptoms, understanding health beliefs and practices, or illness/disease management
How do cultural differences in health beliefs shape perceptions of medical compliance with COVID-19?
What were the major cultural barriers to receiving medical care?
Prepare a short paper (6-8 pages) in which you share your reaction to the book and apply course material to better understand the role of culture on medicine through a sociological lens.
Introduce your paper and *briefly* describe what the book is about (½ – 1 page). Introduce your paper and briefly describe the contents of the book. Imagine you are writing to a friend or family member not in class who may not have read the book. However, keep in mind, this is NOT a book review. The entire introduction including the book summary should be no longer than 1-2 paragraphs in length.
make sure to include an explicit thesis statement
Example: The purpose of this paper is to apply the sociological concepts of illness behavior, specifically in the context of medication practice and medical compliance, and cultural relativism to the events detailed in the book on COVID-19.

Apply two sociological concepts using evidence from the book (2-3 pages).
The focus of this section is the *application* of sociological concepts from class to the events discussed in the book.
Students are expected to:
define their concept using the Barkan textbook
use examples from the book to illustrate the sociological concept
make sure to provide evidence (i.e., CITE and describe details from the book) of the sociological concept.
NOTE: Make sure to include at least FIVE references (the Barkan book and four journal articles).
Connect to current literature (2-3 pages). Using at least four external (i.e., not course material), peer-reviewed journal articles, evaluate whether the U.S. healthcare system still faces challenges related to treating people with different cultural beliefs. Discuss current or potential solutions to addressing these challenges.
In this section, you are answering the research question: Does the U.S. healthcare system face challenges to treating patients with different cultural beliefs concerning COVID-19? In other words, how are we doing as a society in providing culturally competent care to a diverse population?
For this section, you may want to focus on one specific ethnic group to discuss the unique barriers to healthcare (e.g., Hmong Americans, Mexican Americans, Muslim Americans, etc.). Or, you could discuss issues more broadly.

Discuss how the book affected you personally (1-2 pages). For example, what was your reaction and thoughts as you read the book? Did the book change any of your ideas? What did you find particularly interesting, disturbing, inspiring and or educational about the book and why? Is this book useful for your future career? What would you say is the main take-away?
