After looking at a couple of different hominid phylogenies from around the internet, were you surprised to learn that there are many different possible phylogenies that have been proposed based on the same set of fossil specimens? What is your personal opinion on lumping versus splitting?
What were the similarities and differences between the two specimens in Part II? How can you group them phylogenetically to account for these differences? Would you group them into one or two species? Why?
If you think that there is just one species (H. habilis) then how might you account for, or explain, the amount of morphological variation between these two specimens? If you think that there are two species, then how might you account for two similar species living in the same region at the same time?
Did the phylogenies that you explored in Part I have any influence on your interpretation of the specimens presented to you in Part III?
