Read MacIntyre chapter 3, and a selection from Plato’s dialogue Gorgias. Only read the actual dialogue selection, not any of the editorial notes (unless you want to to get more context).
Answer the following questions from the readings as completely as possible:
1. What were the two demands that the sophists were trying to meet in their day and age?
2. For the sophists, what does it mean to function well? What is success for the sophists?
3. Why is the “Natural man” not actually “natural”?
4. From MacIntyre and your reading of the Gorgias text, why is rhetoric or oratory not a true “techne” or “craft” (or “art”)? (those three words are all referring to the same idea. the translation might be different across the texts).
