The rise of the United States as a global power and American foreign military intervention during the 20th century is the focus of your final paper. Using Stephen Kinzer’s book, Overthrow: America’s Century of Regime Change from Hawaii to Iraq, and an article from a peer-reviewed scholarly journal, construct an argument-based analytical essay, with a thesis statement, describing and analyzing the consequences of the United States’ foreign interventions. This paper is worth 20% of your final course grade.
This assignment will also require some basic library research. In addition to reading the Overthrow book, you must also find and use a scholarly journal article related to your paper’s argument. Please use the library’s electronic resources (Academic Search Complete, JSTOR, etc.) for assistance with this portion of the assignment.
This paper must be at least five to seven typed pages in length, doubled space, 12-point font, one-inch margins, numbered pages, and a work cited page. Please note that the annotated bibliography is not included in the five page minimum requirement
You must use citations (MLA format) when using any material (direct or indirect) from class, the assigned documents, your peer-reviewed journal article, the Overthrow book and your textbook. The use of any other outside sources is prohibited.
This paper is due at the beginning of class on Wednesday, December 1, 2021. A copy of this assignment must be submitted to Turnitin with a similarity score under 15%. Papers not submitted to Turnitin will not be graded, nor will papers with a similarity score exceeding 15%.
Extensions will not be granted, and late papers will not be accepted without the prior approval of the instructor.

1. How and why did the United States did engaged in “regime change” operations during the late 19th and 20th centuries? What were the United States’ main foreign policy objectives (national security, trade, promotion of democracy, anti-communism, etc.) in each phase? How did these objectives change over time? Discuss at least one example of American intervention from each phase to illustrate your argument.
2. What role did imperialism play in the United States’ regime change operations?
3. What were the consequences of the United States’ active foreign policy over the past 120 years?
Assignment
1. Stephen Kinzer’s book, Overthrow: America’s Century of Regime Change from Hawaii to Iraq and the corresponding chapters in your textbook.
2. Develop a thesis and a historical argument addressing the assignment questions. In developing your own thesis and argument, please make sure you make extensive use of the assigned book and your scholarly article.
3. Find a scholarly journal article related to the topic of your paper’s argument. Use the Academic Search or JSTOR database to fine an appropriate journal article. An annotated bibliography listing and describing your article is due in class on Wednesday, November, 17th.
4. Submit your completed paper in class on Wednesday, December 1st. A copy of this assignment must also be submitted to Turnitin with a similarity score under 15%. Papers not submitted to Turnitin will not be graded, nor will papers with a similarity score exceeding 15%.
