Pick your critical lens! How will you look at the story?
Summarize the story according to your critical perspective. (If you were to tell what the story is about through your critical lens, what would you say?)
Make your Claim: Make it specific and arguable.
Look for evidence in the story. Back up what you say with what the story says by closely reading a short section. (Don’t try to take on the whole work, it is WAY TOO COMPLEX!!)
Look for sources that will back up what you have to say. Look for definitions, evidence, and other things you can cite as you make your point.
Answer your detractors. What would someone say against your claim? How will you answer them?
Synthesize what you have found out: Bring together all you have found out and tell the reader why it is significant to understanding the story.
