Three Principles of UDL:
Multiple Means of Representation – the “what” of learning; presenting information and content in a variety of ways to support understanding
Multiple Means of Action and Expression – the “how” of learning; offering options and supports to all so everyone can create, learn, and share
Multiple Means of Engagement – the “why” of learning; stimulating motivation and sustained enthusiasm for learning in different ways
Debunking the myth of “learning styles”
The concept of learning styles has been around in education for many years. However, research supports that the use of learning styles (i.e., matching instructional strategies to a particular learning style for a particular student,) is not an effective method of instruction. The more appropriate and updated version of this is planning instruction to address a variety of learning preferences. Planning for a variety of learning preferences aligns with the UDL framework.
