The Humanistic Tradition Week 1 questions (P. 1-135)
Please read through the text and answer the following questions. Unless otherwise noted, please use complete sentences. Also, there may be questions involving more than a sentence or two to fully realize the scope of the concept. I will include word count minimums in parentheses following those particular queries.
Please ask questions and email me if there’s a question or concern you might have before you submit your responses. These are due by Wednesday at 5 pm CST.
1) Based on the early development of humanity, what is considered the one thing that differentiates us from all other species in terms of intelligence? (one or two sentences are fine.)
2) Which four areas of the world are considered the earliest civilizations and what do they all have in common? (one or two sentences)
3) Often overlooked, what makes The Epic of Gilgamesh such an important “first” in the evolution of literature? Explain. (25 words minimum)
4) In terms of art, what contributions did Egypt make? Please list at least two. (25 words min.)
5) Describe the caste system of India. How does it compare and contrast with our own class system? Do they share similarities? (25-50 words min.)
6) Which textile drove China’s early economics? (one word)
7) Name three innovations and/or ideas that directly shaped America and the west in general. There are many to choose from. Explain your answer. Is there any thing you discovered here that you didn’t know before? What is it? Explain. (100 words min.)
8) In your own words define “humanist philosophy.”
9) On page 114-5, Vitruvius’ Principles of Symmetry, the author posits that the “proportions of the human body should govern architectural design. Do you agree or disagree with the statement? Explain. (25 to 50 words min.)
Although you don’t need to record your answers for this, look at the list of Greek Deities in the brown box on the lower right of page 85. How many are you familiar with in contemporary culture?
Workshop Question #1: Compare and contrast Hammurabi’s Code with the Hebrew Decalogue (Ten Commandments) and the lengthy confession given by souls before Osiris and Isis. (This passage is located in the left column on page 53.) Although developed through two different cultures, what do you notice about each in similar and a chief difference? (150 words minimum)
