Your paper will be double-spaced, approximately 3 pages in length, with times new roman or cambria font, size 12, page numbers, and one inch margins. Do not use contractions or ‘I’ language. Anything else and I will take off FIVE points for not listening and following directions in the overall impression section of the rubric. The whole assignment will be devoted to comparing and contrasting of the pro-suffragette and anti-suffrage post cards.
How to Do the Assignment:
The specific goal of this exercise is to build upon what we have done in class with primary sources and help you engage in critical thinking. I am asking you to select three pro-suffragette and three anti-suffrage post cards or cartoons and submit a primary source analysis of the items.
You will compare and contrast the items following the instructions.
How to Analyze Historic Visual Culture: You will use this to write your paper.
List the objects or people you see in each cartoon.
Identify the cartoon caption or title.
Are there words or phrases used to identify objects or people within the
cartoon?
Record any important dates or number that appear in the cartoon.
Which words or phrases are the most telling of the piece? Talk about them.
Which of the objects in the cartoon is a symbol and what do the symbols
mean?
Detail the emotions portrayed in the cartoon.
Describe the action taking place.
Explain how the words in the cartoon clarify symbols.
What is the message of the cartoon?
Which interest group agrees or disagrees with the cartoon’s message and
why?
Proper citation for the post cards:
When you address a specific card use the footnote provided to cite it. Palczewski, Catherine H. Postcard Archive. University of Northern Iowa. Cedar Falls, IA. The name of the card.
Your essay will have five parts/paragraphs:
An introduction that discusses the postcards/cartoons. You must tell me the main point you are comparing and contrasting in a topic sentence.
Describe and summarize the pro-suffragette cards.
Describe and summarize the anti-suffragette cards.
The rest of the paper should then discuss these differences and/or similarities in more detail with specific examples, concluding with a summary of your
argument(s).
Conclusion paragraph. Tell me what you told me.
