Consider ecosystem services on which you depend, such as timber for building material, pollination for food supply, dung removal for adequate livestock production, or enjoyment of songbirds. What plant, animal and microbial species control these services? Is the diversity of these species important and why? On what food sources or habitat conditions do these species depend for their survival? Which species could be reduced or eliminated as a result of climate change, habitat destruction (such as from harvest or land development), or insecticide use? How might this affect continued delivery of ecosystem services? Special interests frequently argue that non-economically-important species are not worthy of protection, compared to the value of resource harvest or land development. Does this perspective threaten the sustainable delivery of ecosystem services on which you depend?
