This week and next, we will be examining the topic of expertise, focused within the context of medical practices. In doing so, we will also be considering questions of democratic deliberations and decision-making.
There are a number of angles or ‘ways in’ to talking about expertise, so let’s have a think…
Who, exactly, IS an expert? What counts as expertise in medicine or other specialized areas? Are there traits or characteristics that diminish or disqualify knowledge from being considered expert in character?
Can medical or other kinds of expertise and democratic decision making ‘gel’ together? Or do they conflict in some fashion?
When there are competing or conflicting claims to knowledge, whose claims ought to carry the day? How can consensus be achieved?
