Why and How I Write

(This is a narrative writing assignment that builds on what you have been learning so far this semester).

Portfolio Project #2: Why and How I Write (Rhetorical Analysis)

Prompt:

In this project, your purpose is to examine writing in your personal life. After collecting evidence, you will write to inform your audience of the following:

To whom do you write?
What do you write about?
Why do you write?
To do this, you will analyze three pieces of writing-

(e.g., an email, a tweet, a Facebook, Instagram or Snapchat post, a blog post, a grocery list, etc.)

You will examine how genre, rhetorical appeals, rhetorical situation, medium, mode, and audience influence what you write and how you write.

The word “Rhetorical” can be substituted for the word “Writing”, so rhetorical appeals and rhetorical situations is basically what do you want or what are you asking for in the different types of writing that you do and what environment do you find yourself in when writing. For example, where are you when you email, text, blog (in your bedroom, at work, etc.)
Medium and mode is essentially what are you using to write, a pen, a computer, your phone, etc.
And “audience” is just that, who are you writing for, your friends, your mom, your instructor, yourself?

***You should also refer to the reading and writing that you have done in this class up to now to help you explain your writing process.

Write a 700-1000 word “first-person,” double-spaced, Times New Roman 11-12pt paper using MLA format for any in-text citations. Also provide a Works Cited page listing all of the sources used to write your paper. Students may combine their own personal narrative and connect it to the “larger conversation of writing” by using outside sources to support their own types of daily writing. This is the way that students will earn maximum points for this assignment. It is your choice. . . you decide what your writing will focus on, possibly explore how other people write and come to your own conclusions about writing for yourself, writing to your friends, writing for an English class, etc.

*** Students that want to include in their submission for this writing assignment a 1) short mapping sheet, 2) an annotated bibliography and 3) a BADSOC scoring of any articles included will earn extra credit. If you are able to, you should combine your work into one file before uploading your submission. This is an example of how you will start taking control and responsibilty of the choices that you make as a college student (and as an adult).
