Causal Arguments
For this essay, you will write an argument that focuses on a complex problem or phenomenon. Find an issue that still has folks scratching their heads, asking “why is this happening?” and break it down for us.
Causal arguments are used often in academia and beyond to search for the roots of social issues and phenomena. We use the causal argument structure to not only examine the causes of particular problems that occur in the world, but also to discuss how one issue often causes many other problems to follow (‘domino effect’). Causal arguments have multiple variables—there are usually many factors combining to lead to the z effect. Causal arguments are debatable—though you can still use science to back up your position, causal arguments are issues where society generally cannot agree on the causes. When all causes are proven by science, we accept that as fact.
Types of Causal Arguments:
Causes of a Problem—In this argument structure, you discuss a particular problem or issue and then analyze the potential causes of this problem/issue. For example, let’s say you were exploring the causes of Arizona’s low education rankings. You would break down the whys: lack of funding, poor management, and an outdated testing system might be your reasons. Your goal with this argument structure is raise awareness about the why of the problem.
Problems caused by a Problem—In this argument structure, you discuss how a particular problem has caused other problems to occur. For example, if you were examining health care, you could prove how flawed billing practices in the health care industry lead to the following problems: inflation, bankruptcy, and poor health care quality for much of the population. Your goal with this argument structure is to raise awareness about the detrimental influence of your main problem.
There are many difficult problems and issues in the world today– the only way to begin to solve them and prevent future problems is to understand their causes.
Required Elements:
An intro section which includes an exordium (attention grabber), a narratio (brief background information which explains significance of exordium).

A thesis statement which includes the main causal chain.
Fully developed discussion of your topic, which includes information from research material. All information must be properly cited according to MLA standards.
You must paraphrase and cite from a minimum of 3 research articles. Articles must be from the CAC library research database unless you have received specific permission to use information from an internet website.
A developed rebuttal & refute section.
A fully developed conclusion.
