Why did civilizations develop into empires?

I want the paper’s thesis to be about how Philip II laid the groundwork for his son Alexander’s success as ruler
of Macedonia. Something along the lines of “Alexander the Great gets a lot of recognition, but his father’s
work to build up Macedonia helped Alexander more than anything.”
There HAS to be one primary source (an article from that time period) and two secondary
sources (preferably writings from the past 10 years). It all needs to be cited with in-text citations.

Below I copied the actual rubric. I know my thesis does not seem like it lines up super well but the teacher said it would be good. Just have to include some content about how Philip and Alexander effected Macedonia.

What is a civilization? Why did civilizations develop into empires? Why did empires rise and fall over time? Consider the many empires we examined in the first four chapters of our textbook. None of them exist today. Yet, their ideas, politics, and even religious concepts reach across time and can be found in our own civilization. As we can see from our textbook, empires built upon the civilizations that came before them. They adapted, incorporated, and evolved over time before failing. There are very valuable lessons to be learned from the fall of empires of the past. In order to learn from the past, we first have to study the past.

I have installed a Writing Skills module which will be available for you to use in building the final paper.
A rubric will be used for grading. The term paper will use the MLA Style for formatting and be turned in as a Word document via the online file upload.
Specific requirements are as follows:
MLA Style format.
Times New Roman 12 point font, double-spaced with 1-inch margins.
The essay is to be two and a half pages plus a MLA Style formatted Works Cited page divided into two sections. The first section will have a heading of Primary Sources. You will place your primary sources here. The second section will have a heading of Secondary Sources. You will place your academic secondary sources, regular secondary sources, and any tertiary sources you use in this section. This Works Cited page should use the same font as the body of the paper.
There must be THREE properly formatted citations in the body of the paper itself. These should follow the MLA Style guidelines.
You are required to use a minimum of ONE primary source for full credit.
You are required to use a minimum of TWO different academic secondary sources for full credit. We are making a strong distinction between academic secondary sources vs. online sources. I am allowing the World History Encyclopedia to count as one of the academic secondary sources.
You are expected to use proper grammar throughout the paper.
