Keyword Search for Pivotal Response Training (PRT)
Overview
When completing a literature review you need to use different
library databases to search for your sources. You also need to determine
keywords that lead to the best results. For this assignment, you will
design a search plan and implement it to find the best resources for
your literature review. Keep in mind that you will eventually need to
select 5–7 articles for your annotated bibliography.
Preparation
If you have not already, complete the following:
Select the two databases from the Capella library you would like to use for your search.
Determine at least three different keyword combinations for your search.
Complete your paper using the Keyword Search Template, given in the resources. In your paper, include the following:
A table that documents the two databases, the three keyword
combinations, the results of those searches, and how many of those
articles were potentially useful. Refer to the Keyword Search Template
to see an example for how you could set up this table.
A summary of the strategies you used to conduct your search.
Why did you use the keywords you did?
How did you determine the best way to get from the hundreds of results to a more manageable number?
Were your results too narrow in any of your searches?
Were you happy with the results you were getting?
Note: This assignment does not include a summary of the resources themselves, instead it is a summary of your search results.
Additional Requirements
Your assignment should also meet the following requirements:
Written communication: Written communication should be free of errors that detract from the overall message.
Length: 1–2 double-spaced pages.
Font and font size: Times New Roman, 12 point.
Template: Use the Keyword Search Template to complete the assignment.
What is the Literature Review?
Purpose of the Literature Review
The literature review helps place your research in the context of
what has already been done in the field. The literature review is a
component of most scholarly writing. Dissertations include a
chapter-long literature review, and research articles will include a
literature review near the beginning of the article. Sometimes an entire
article will be devoted to reviewing the literature.
Resources for your Literature Review
The literature review focuses on primary, peer-reviewed resources.
Often starting with the seminal literature of the field, it mostly
consists of research articles on the topic. Secondary sources are used
sparingly, if at all.
In order to write a comprehensive literature review, you must search
in multiple databases. No single source will have all of the primary
resources you should consult. A comprehensive literature review should
include searches in the following:
Multiple journal databases
Book databases
Dissertations
Sources outside the library
