Final Paper: The paper should be typed, double-spaced, standard text and margins. Please place
the word count on the title page of your paper.
Your final grade will be reflective of the quality of the library research and the analysis of the literature in the paper. The object of this course for students to write an intelligent analysis, on a topic of their choosing, which integrates scholarly sources, synthesis of scholarly sources (literature review), and analysis of the literature (topic analysis assignment). Previous assignments are intended to be revised and used in the final paper. Please make ample use of your previous work—this will help you create a stellar final paper.
Requirements:
– 20-25 pages (double spaced, 12 point font)
– 25 citations, 15 scholarly and 10 of your choice (only 15 scholarly required for internship
students) (Annotations do not need to be included in final paper bibliography).
– APA or Chicago style in-text citations and reference page
Please also note that the previous assignments are used to help you start and develop your final project in a timely manner. These assignments can be used in an edited form in the final paper— for instance, the literature review, if written sufficiently the first time, could be a section in the paper. Likewise, the topic statement due at the beginning of the semester would be a good opportunity to develop the introduction to the paper.
Topic Statement: Students must submit a 2-4 page essay that identifies the topic of their project and the primary aims of this. In creating your topic statement, consider the following:
15 scholarly (or what is also called “peer-reviewed) sources (15 for internship students)
15 annotations (summaries described above) for each scholarly source
For students not completing an internship, list of 10 additional sources that will be used in the
paper (internship students will use their experience in place of these sources but are welcome to
include additional sources at their discretion).
All sources formatted in either Chicago or APA style.
A literature review is an essay—in this case, 10-12 pages—that organizes and synthesizes the sources found in assignment #2 (and your internship experience, if applicable) into a coherent and comprehensive exploration of what scholars have said about the topic, and the multiple ways scholars have approached the issue or attempted to solve the problem.
The purpose of a literature review is to:
– describe what is already known about your research topic
– organize sources to reveal common patterns, differences between scholarly “camps”, and
similarities amongst literature
– present history of issue/topic/problem identified in assignment #1
– state what we don’t know about your research topic (in other words, a “gap in the
literature”) Requirements:
– 10-12 pages in length (double spaced, 12 point font)

– Answer the following:
o What is already known about your research topic(s)/issue(s)?
o What are the common approaches to your topic?
o What have scholars found about your topic?
o Where are the points of disagreement or divergence amongst scholars? o What is not known about your research topic(s)/issues(s)?
o Why is it important to study this/these topic(s)/issue(s)? In other words, what could be gained, in terms of solutions if we study this issue?
Once you’ve uncovered what scholars and others have said about your topic, the next step is to analyze your topic and provide your original insights into the topic/problem. For this assignment, students will complete a 5-7 page essay that states a position relative to the topic/problem identified and discusses the objections, assumptions, and implications of this position. Students also examine whether the proposed solution is feasible, and under what circumstances their proposed approach would work. This assignment allows students to bring in their own experience (and internship experience), alongside the scholarly sources, to better understand and articulate how we, as a society, might respond to the topic or problem identified at the outset of the course.
