ELISA: ELISA is a biochemical assay that can be used to determine if a patient possesses antibodies towards a particular pathogen in their blood (which would indicate current or previous infection by that pathogen). The below diagram walks you through how an ELISA works (use below diagram instead of the diagram in lab manual). If you would like another explanation, a good video describing the assay can be found at: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RRbuz3VQ100
1. Why do we test for the presence of an antibody to determine if someone has been exposed or infected by a pathogen?
2. Why do you think the ELISA procedure could give a false positive answer (i.e. color develop in a sample from an uninfected patient)?
3. Explain why a negative ELISA result appears colorless.
4. Among different positive results for the ELISA, you might see some wells that are very dark green, while others are lighter green (see picture below). What could the intensity of the color development indicate?
5. Although an outbreak on the scale of the COVID19 pandemic is uncommon, disease outbreak throughout human history is quite common. Do some research on another instance of disease outbreak (either historical or recent) and summarize your findings in a paragraph. Make sure to include whether the outbreak was an epidemic or pandemic, the type of pathogen (bacterial, viral, parasite), how the disease spread, and what measures were undertaken to control it.
