Why do you think individuals engage in self-mutilation?

When describing Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD), a common metaphor often used to describe these individuals is “emotional burnout”. Whereas a burn victim’s skin would be sensitive to touch, an individual with BPD is sensitive to emotions, self-identity, abandonment, and to relationships and they may engage in certain behaviors because of the influence of relationships with others. One of the diagnostic criteria for BPD is recurrent suicidal behavior, gestures, threats, or self-mutilating behavior.
