According to Maslow’s hierarchy, we have basic needs in five specific areas – physiological, safety, love, esteem and self-actualization. Each level directly relates to and affects our emotions. As such, it is rare to find two people having the exact same level of need in each of this areas. It is very important to recognize how to people process experiences through their emotions. In the funeral industry, one of your main priorities should be to always make the grieving family feel as comfortable as possible. Everyone grieves differently and handle their emotions a number of different ways. While some people may be inconsolable during the grieving process, others may become angry and agitated. You must be able to recognize how they’re processing their emotions and act accordingly.

The experiences that we encounter early in life truly impacts us and understanding how people process emotional experiences drives us to action and reaction. Even if we are unable to completely understand the emotions of others, being mindful and considerate of these feelings is enough to build upon to help us create meaningful relationships and friendships. With emotional awareness comes the opportunity to learn more about ourselves and we can also learn so much from one another. Knowing how to recognize and understand the emotions of others especially in this career path is extremely vital. Since emotions will almost certainly be on an all-time high when it comes to families and funerals, this is an area that we must be careful with as we cannot always assume that people will understand and react to grieving in a way that we are comfortable with. It is highly critical that we handle these families with care and compassion. Emotions are an integral part of all our lives, knowing how to express ourselves as well as empathize with others in response; is not only gratifying but also humanistic. Being aware of our emotions allows us to navigate when it comes to solving conflicts or making sound decisions. I believe that understanding how to handle different mind states and emotions will be helpful to us in our chosen career path.
