Why is it that we always seem to be most worried about or fearful of stranger crime? At best, only a low percentage of crime occurs between two people who have never known each other before. Far more common, on the order of 60% or greater, is crime committed between intimates/family members or acquaintances. Domestic violence is at epidemic proportions, yet we worry more about rare or random events. Why? What can be done about it? The average risk of victimization in society is greatly determined by how “functional” or non-quarrelsome is one’s circle of family and friends. What does it say about our society that we have more to fear from the ones we are more closely related to? In your discussion, please try to present some good statistics on this (hint: your textbook doesn’t have any), and try to come up with some feasible policy for domestic violence or at least some good way to wrap one’s head around the issue.

How can a non-ideological criminal justice policy be created? Do your best at describing one. It would have to be constitutional, of course, so spell out your jurisprudence, but most of all, do NOT base it on any of the historical or existing ideologies, like deterrence, incapacitation, retribution, rehabilitation, reintegration, or restoration. Create something new. The goal of being non-ideological is to minimize or eliminate political gain and moral meddling; i.e., something everyone can agree on, keeps the criminal justice system from being subject to fringe science, keeps criminal justice policy from being subject to knee-jerk reactions, and doesn’t support the personal agenda of any vested interest group.

Why are so many (48% of more) of people incarcerated in the “slammer” because of drug trafficking or drug-related offenses?
