Before 1972, the number of women employed in the criminal justice system as police officers, correctional officers, lawyers, and judges was small. These women were excluded from most jobs that entailed the exercise of authority over men. Women worked only as “specialists,” drawing on qualities and skills associated with their gender. As part of a larger social trend in which women have entered occupations traditionally held by men, the number of women working in all parts of the criminal justice system is growing. Despite progress, however, resistance to women has been significant and they have not been completely integrated. Women in justice fields sometimes face many barriers, such as exclusion from informal work cultures, hostility, organizational policies that promote gender separation, differential assignments, and sexual harassment. To better understand the role of gender in the gender in a 21st century justice system, please complete the following writing assignment.
To complete this assignment, you will be writing a critical and evidence based research paper on the impact of women in justice professions.
Your paper should be formatted in the five section format indicated below:
Paragraph 1: Introduce the topic of women working in justice professions, including relevant historical or contemporary elements (this information is presented in the article, as well as the textbook). Include any relevant statistics, theories, or events. Note: This information should be concise, and set the tone for the rest of your analysis.
Paragraph 2: Summarize the study in the article. Your summary should include the following: What was the goal of this research or rather what were the researchers trying to achieve by conducting this study? A brief summary of the method section (sample size, the instrument, and data collection procedure). A brief summary of the results section (major findings). End this section with the authors major implications (the last section of the article).
***As this is a summary, this section should not go on for multiple paragraphs. You will need to be thorough but condense your work and limit it to major and noteworthy aspects of the study. Additionally, try to explain these items in your own words as much as possible. Using a few direct quotes is fine but this section should not be riddled with SOLEY copied and pasted direct quotes. Include quotation marks whenever you use the authors exact wording and indicate page number(s). Do NOT copy and paste from the articles ABSTRACT.
Paragraph 3: What are three benefits to the justice system in having gender equality and inclusivity among justice professionals. Support each benefit with evidence and/or data from scholarly secondary sources. Explain this evidence in detail. End this section with a concluding sentence that reasserts how the experiences of women working in the justice system is related to gender equality and inclusivity in the justice system.
Paragraph 4: What are three benefits to the society in having gender equality and inclusivity among justice professionals. Support each benefit with evidence and/or data from scholarly secondary sources. Explain this evidence in detail. End this section with a concluding sentence that reasserts how the experiences of women working in the justice system is related to gender equality and inclusivity in society.
Paragraph 5: Write a conclusion. Thoroughly discuss: 1) The importance of having research on women in justice professions, such as the Helfgott et al., (2018) article above. Think about why studies like this are beneficial. 2) Why is it important to have representation in the justice system that goes beyond gender in the justice system (e.g.) gender and race, gender and socioeconomic status, gender and religion, gender and sexuality, etc. 2) 3) End this section with a discussion about an area of women in justice professions that you would like to see more research on and why (e.g.) women of color who work in corrections, LGBTQIA+ women who work in policing, etc. Be specific. These are just a few examples, you may reference anything that you are curious about knowing, as long as it relates to gender. But I encourage you to think critically about a topic or group related to women in justice professions that you would like to learn more about.
The goal is this paper is to develop an understanding of the many advancements and challenges that women working in justice professions face, as well as the benefit of women’s inclusion. Your paper needs to demonstrate that you have reflected on this relationship critically and from a gender and justice perspective. Further, for the analysis of this paper, you will need to stick solely to an analysis of women working in justice related fields. Any additional analysis about gender representation in non justice related professions and/or unrelated social critiques, will result in a deduction of points.
EACH Section should be at least one paragraph (5-9 sentences). New paragraphs should be indented.
