Essay 2 (Bronte/with
Research)

Select one of the topics below and write a 3-5 full-page essay
defending your position.

1. Research
Victorian religion and morality codes. Examine Mr. Brocklehurst (clergyman and master
of Lowood), Eliza Reed (aspiring nun and daughter of Mrs. Reed) and St. John
Rivers (parson of Marsh End and missionary). What representations of religion are portrayed by these characters?

2. Research
Victorian education and labor laws. Consider Jane Eyre’s journey of learning
and employment (Lowood Institution/student; Thornfield Hall/governess; Marsh
End/teacher). Is her story of self-realization atypical given gender
limitations and class hierarchy in Victorian England?

A total of THREE sources are
required for this essay. One quote or paraphrase must come from the novel
itself (primary source). The other two
should come from academic articles, books, essays, dissertations about
the novel and the topic selected (secondary
sources).

Information from commercial sources
(.com) or (.net) cannot be
used in academic writing. Never quote or paraphrase information from
e-notes, student essays, Wikipedia, etc.

To locate scholarly material about
Bronte’s novel and your selected topic access MU’s Arts and Humanities database (Literary Criticism link). Search by
author, book title, or topic. Another (massive) database for literary criticism
is JStor.
