1. Read the following scenario:
You are assigned as the ‘A Unit’ Officer and are walking the tier. You are stopped by inmate Victor Sanchez, an inmate you know well. He begins to tell you that some other inmates in the unit are going to assault his cellmate, Matt Kuchar, in the near future. Kucher is widely regarded by all inmates as a loudmouth, thief, and all-around troublemaker. In fact, you are of the opinion that most people on the unit, including other officers, believe Kuchar has earned a beating.
Later that day, while back at your desk, you think about the information you received from inmate Sanchez. You are confident that the information is good. But you are having second thoughts about passing it on to your supervisor. Doing so could result in Kuchar’s potential attackers being transferred to a different facility, but could also result in Kuchar being transferred. How will these inmates react if the planned assault is stopped? Will someone else step in and assault Kuchar? Will Sanchez be perceived as a snitch by the other inmates? Will you be assaulted if you stop the assault?
Just then, the Shift Lieutenant enters the unit.
2. Write a 500-word essay and discuss how you would handle this situation. First, describe the benefits to the social climate of the unit if you do not report the potential assault. Next, discuss your ethical obligation to protect Kuchar and everyone else in the unit. Finally, explain how you would act, and discuss the factors that influenced your decision.
The essay should be in 12-point, Times New Roman, double-spaced, with one-inch margins. All sourcing needs to be written in APA format (if applicable). You will be required to submit the paper through Turnitin for a plagiarism review.
