Write a brief essay on how you could incorporate the other two sets of standards into your favorite standard.

To address social
studies in their classroom, there are three widely used standards in our state:
ISBE, NCSS, and CCSS – ELA. The expectation is that you will be able
“fluent” in all three. For this activity, you
are going to choose your favorite ISBE content standard and write a brief essay
on how you could incorporate the other two sets of standards into your favorite
standard.
The purpose here is for you to develop fluency
in the standards. Some schools will only use ISBE, others NCSS, and still
others will use a combination with CCSS – ELA.
Required Tasks:
1. Review the ISBE,
NCSS, and CCSS standards. Be sure you know how to read them properly.
2. Find your favorite
ISBE content standard (referenced as Disciplinary Concepts on the chart), any
grade level or content area that is covered in your certification (grades 1-6).
Just pick one you like! Do NOT pick an
Inquiry Skills Standard for this activity.
3. Find within NCSS
(chapters 4 or 5, depending on grade level) and CCSS, where your favorite ISBE
may apply. (Think creatively. They are not identical. You are “translating”
ISBE into NCSS and CCSS.) You might find a few different standards, especially
since NCSS uses themes, not topic standards. The creative thinking comes into
play with CCSS and trying to find standards that work for social studies. Just
remember, whatever you choose from ISBE, you have to use the same grade level
in NCSS and CCSS. Do not try to align standards for different grades. They are
grade level specific.
4. Take time to reflect
on how these standards are related. Are they similar, different? Why do think
there are different standards that all apply to social studies?
5. Write a short 1-2
page statement explaining the relationship you see between these
standards.There are two parts to this:

1. This will focus on
your favorite ISBE content standard: Discuss your one chosen ISBE content
standard and what you found that would align in the other two sets of
standards. Be certain to explicitly reference the standards in your writing. Do
not make your reader guess which standard you are addressing. Avoid pronouns
like “it” and specifically use the standards’ codes or name the
themes. (You may wish to start with an opening paragraph identifying the
standards fully so that you may abbreviate later in the essay. For example use
this: ISBE SS.CV. 1.2. Explain what governments are and some of their
functions in the introduction, but reference it as SS.CV.1.2 in the rest of the
paper. Use Theme 2: Time, Continuity, and Change in the introduction but
reference it as Theme 2 in the body. Finally, use CC.1.R.L.3 Key Ideas and
Details: Describe characters, settings, and major events in a story, using key
details in the introduction and then CC.1.RL.3 in the body.) The discussion
should address how the standards you selected align. Do not be shy, if they do
not align well, write about that.
2. This will address the
standards as a set of standards. Now that you have focused on specific
individual standards (one ISBE and at least one NCSS and one CCSS), it is time
to discuss how you view the overall relationship between these three sets of
standards. What do you think about them for classroom content and pedagogy
guidance? Which would you find easier to work with and why? How well do you
think they work together? You get to analyze them. Whatever insights or
critiques you have matters, so include them. Remember, you are evaluating all
three full sets – so do not focus on an individual standard. This is your
change to look at ISBE, NCSS, and CCSS and analyze them on they work as
groupings of standards.
This is worth 20 points.
Grading will be holistic. That means: explaining the connections so that your
reader can see what you see; using proper grammar and academic writing
standards; and clearly identifying the standards. Everyone will begin with one
ISBE standard, but the number of NCSS and CCSS will vary accordingly. This is
why there is not an explicit rubric. Just do NOT exceed 2 full double spaced
pages.
