The final two papers are the “capstone” of our course where we turn from the theoretical to the practical and thus see the fruit of course. We started with the Symposium where the question of “What is love?” is being discussed from many different perspectives until Plato concludes with a pure and heavely picture of ideal love. Building on the conversation Plato started, C.S. Lewis preserves Plato’s heavenly love while delineating three natural loves from the tradition.
The Purpose: To think critically and argue effectively through writing. They will demonstrate their ability to evaluate the values, beliefs, and assumptions of contemporary culture from a philosophical perspective and discuss the unique value and dangers of each kind of love in a sophisticated manner.
