Write a critical reflection of your growth and development during your practicum experience in a clinical setting has the benefit of helping you identify opportunities for improvement in your clinical skills while also recognizing your clinical strengths and successes.
This week, you will write your last and final Journal Entry, reflecting on your clinical strengths and opportunities for improvement. Further reflect on your pediatric patients you have seen and the conditions that you have diagnosed and treated. Review your Journal Entry that you submitted in Week 1.
Journal Entry (2–3 pages):
Explain what most excited and/or concerned you throughout your pediatric clinical experience.
Discuss how your personal definition of family and family roles has changed or stayed the same.
How has your understanding of family and family roles influenced your assessment of children and their families?
Explain how your understanding of culture (both the culture of the provider and that of the child and his or her family) has changed and how it may have influenced the assessments you conducted during your practicum.
Assess how you did with accomplishing the goals and objectives you developed in Week 1 for the practicum experience.
Based on your practicum experience, refine your existing goals and/or develop new goals for your continued education and professional practice. Be sure to consider the NAPNAP Position Statement on Age Parameters for Pediatric Nurse Practitioner Practice.

WEEK 1 JOURNAL:
Journal Reflection
I hope to have a fantastic clinical experience. First, I want to gain new skills and knowledge concerning my role as a pediatric nurse practitioner. Secondly, I want to become confident in interviewing the patient. This is an exciting experience since it will allow me to work with a particular patient population that I have never worked with before. This clinical experience will also help me to be confident in reviewing tests and laboratory results. These achievements will impact my practicum positively by having the confidence to conduct roles and responsibilities successfully. However, I will also experience some challenges due to my lack of knowledge and skills. For example, I cannot remove foreign objects from different parts of the body. Additionally, I cannot remove skin tags which may impact my career. However, I plan to learn them at the beginning of my practicum.
In my understanding family is a group of people bound by blood and live together as a unit. As a family, it is always crucial to stay together and always be there for one another. Additionally, it is crucial to make decisions as a whole to promote unity. During the assessment of a child, the decision-making process may be delayed since every member of the family has to contribute to the process. Additionally, the involvement of the family during the assessment may hinder some services from being delivered. For example, some parents refuse to vaccinate their children. In such a situation, I would educate the parents on the importance of vaccination to prevent any myths and misconceptions.
Cultural difference is a major issue that contributes to conflict and misunderstanding in care facilities. I have seen several cases where the culture of the provider and the patient differs. As a provider, it is essential to understand different patients have different cultural beliefs and values. In such a situation, it is always important to present the patient and provide the services
they require. For example, when dealing with a child, the family are the main people involved in the assessment. During such a time, the provider must follow the guidelines given by the parent and ensure the child is offered the services required despite going against the cultural beliefs of the provider.
Kolcaba’s Theory of Comfort
The theory was developed for purposes of health practices, education, and research. It indicates that it is crucial to ensure comfort in all healthcare practices. According to this theory, the best outcomes in every nursing activity are achieved by ensuring comfort is maintained (Oliveira et al., 2020). In this case, relief, transcendence, and ease must be ensured. As a pediatric nurse, I will ensure that what is achieved among all my patients. In this case, I will offer pain medication to relieve pain and hence achieve relief comfort. Additionally, I will always ensure that the patient’s anxieties are calmed at all times (Oliveira et al., 2020). Hence, I will ensure all the social, cultural, environmental, psychospiritual, and physical factors affecting the patient are reduced. During my practicum, I will ensure I utilize the assumptions of the theory and hope to achieve the best results and experiences at the end of my practice.
