This assignment is
worth 15% of your final grade.
Background
Throughout this
course, we have looked at the ways that colonial violence and structural racism
are woven into the fabric of what is now Canada. In the films Invasion and Kanehsatake:
270 Years of Resistance, we witness individual experiences of legal,
police, and military force being used against Indigenous land protectors, in
events three decades apart. In 2020, police violence against BIPOC (Black,
Indigenous, and People of Colour) communities is a recognized issue. This
assignment provides you the opportunity to think critically about the
frequently violent relationship between the Canadian state and Indigenous
peoples.
This assignment
supports the following General Learning Outcomes:
Evaluate understandings of Indigenous
Canadians social, political and legal experiences in both historic and
contemporary Canada.
Have an understanding of the ongoing
process of colonization
Critically examine the understandings
of both non-Indigenous and Indigenous Canadians prior to entering and exiting
the course.
1. Write a critical reflection paper about your understanding of the relationship between Indigenous peoples and the Canadian state, using specific examples from course materials.
2. Consider some of
the following questions in your reflection.
a. What stood out the most to you in the
films showing frontline stories from Unistoten Camp and Kanehsatake? How did
learning about these experiences affect you?

relationships between the Canadian state and Indigenous communities changed? If
so, in what way?

responsibility to protect the land changed? If so, describe how.
