In 1964-5, the United States began to commit major ground, air and naval forces to Vietnam. Why? In your explanation, be sure to include a discussion of how and why the Vietminh (and later the National Liberation Front) became such a threatening force. This should include an examination of the various nationalist and communist movements that emerged to resist the French, the Vietminh’s successful mobilization of people during and after World War II, their defeat of the French, their struggle with Ngo Dinh Diem’s government in South Vietnam after the Geneva Accords, and the creation of the National Liberation Front. Then, putting Vietnam and the NLF into the global Cold War context, explain the American decision to intervene with such force in 1964.
